Yuna & Sugizo Interview

Their first tour, "First Pray," began on November 29th at Osaka Big Cat.
What kind of live feeling will their constant thought of "From darkness to light" produce?
In conclusion, I am bringing you the words of these two as they are wrapped up in their first tour.

When I first heard your second single, "Uetiko," I felt the intense force of the song. If I think about your debut single, "Inner Child," it was certainly like a trial run. If you talk about it in terms of gear, I can only think that it was in low gear.

If you talk about it from their stance, which is calling the current era into question, the vehicle called The FLARE is not an automatic. This shift change did not occur on its own. With a speed that causes ones insides to quake, they have changed to 2nd gear.

The announcement of their oneman tour, which came earlier than expected, seems to have a similar feeling. In the previous interview Sugizo said, with an expression of someone who was correcting something, "Even if we tried to get all our fans together one by one there are currently no fans of The FLARE." He also said that they would only be doing events for the rest of the year and would not do a one man until after the spring of next year. But, I think the they probably felt a sense of substantiality when they were recording "Uetiko." So they compressed the project's activity by nearly half a year and decided to meet the fans. Below I've printed part of the interview they did on their oneman shows.

Sugizo: I still can't clearly picture what the shows will become. We are rehearsing and thinking about it, but as expected when I can't stand on the stage, I can't see its true shape.

- Will you be happy as long as the fans enjoy it or are you trying to do something with more consciousness?

Yuna: It's only an ideal but I strongly think that I would like to produce something with a consciousness.

Sugizo: But the first priority is to get the energy. (laughs)

- Like at American churches where everyone will sing gospel music together? A show that, even though it's like a prayer, is still incredible? (laughs) Yuna: Ahaha, something like that. (laughs)

Sugizo: Although I think I would like to aim for something spiritual, if you make it too strict and precise, you can't free your heart can you? That's why you don't need to have any rules.

- Certainly you want to raise your level but you don't want to get stiff.

Sugizo: I think that people are borne along on a natural current. So, I am just frantically expressing.

Yuna: I think that they probably won't know over half the songs so I'll just be happy if they ride along on the groove. I'll be happy if they shout.

Sugizo: It's our first true show as The FLARE. It's like I want them to help me with this first step. We can't create the atmosphere alone. We don't know what kind of fans will come and we don't know what kind of fusion it will be. All I know is that I want to take the first step together.

Yuna: I talked about it earlier but in this sphere of a show I would be happy if we can become close and can share a lot of feelings. But we still don't know how it will develop. But precisely because we don't know I feel like there are possibilities.

Creating world peace, returning the life force that this planet called the earth should have intrinsically... Everyone is thinking of these things. I doubt there is anyone who would speak against them. But most people, when asked, "So what are you doing?" fear getting muddled up and close their mouth. So what is the result? It can't be truly realized by those in Japan but many people lose their lives. And countries that fear losing the power to be competitive don't see the destruction of the earth and repeat the violence.

Well then, what's to be done?

I touched upon it earlier as well but I don't think there are any people living in this era who have not been infected with some poison. I think we must not shrink from that poison and, once we have understood what it is, think about what we can do as a single person.

With "Uetiko" The FLARE has recorded the fact that there are those kind of souls existing at the end of 2004.
